From Disorder to Structure: How PSAC Enhanced Workplace Safety with a Tailored PowerApp

BookSafe: PSAC’s COVID Office Reopening App for Safe Workplaces

Introduction

The Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) is dedicated to enhancing the working conditions for its members by advocating for issues like justice, human rights, equal pay, and ensuring safe and secure workplaces.

The Challenge

The COVID-19 pandemic presented new challenges for businesses around the world. As workplaces began reopening under strict health protocols, PSAC needed an effective solution to manage building occupancy while ensuring that all visitors were vaccinated and posed no health risk. They required a capacity management app to track and control the number of people entering their offices on a daily and hourly basis, keeping occupancy levels safe.

Solution

To meet these needs, PSAC developed the COVID-19 Office Reopening App using Microsoft Power Apps. This app was designed to manage capacity efficiently and was tailored to all PSAC employees. Integrated with Power Automate for workflow automation, the app includes separate portals for administrators, visitors, and managers. Visitors can schedule entry slots through a calendar showing availability, while building managers can review and approve or reject access requests.

Outcome

The implementation of the app resulted in a smooth and user-friendly experience, with each portal customized to suit specific user roles. PSAC can now effectively manage foot traffic within its offices, ensuring compliance with local COVID-19 safety guidelines. The app has enabled a safe and organized return to work, allowing employees to submit access requests and giving managers the ability to monitor and approve or decline these requests efficiently.
